Obituary:
SMSgt Joseph Augusta Bannister, Jr., 82, of Orlando, departed this life on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. “Sonny”, as he was affectionately known, was born on August 23, 1942 in Amelia, Virginia to the late Margaret and Joseph Bannister. Joseph completed his formal education and while in high school, he helped lead his Baseball team to winning a State Title.
Joseph was a retired veteran of the US Air Force and was discharged as a Senior Master Sergeant. While serving in the military, he worked in computer operations for over 25 years. After his successful military career, he became employed with the City of Orlando as a computer operator until retirement again.
SMSgt Bannister was a caring, trustworthy, kind hearted and respectable man. He was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church for several years. He always taught his children and grandchildren how to be strong and resilient. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and bowling. He was a hard worker and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Joseph is survived by his 3 children, Dahlia (Edward) Thompson, Joan Bannister, Andrew (Rosemary) Bannister; 5 siblings, Martha (Herman) Ellis, Dorothy Braddy, Della Montague, Margaret (George) Everett, Nancy Walters; 10 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024 from 5-7PM at the church. A service of celebration will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, 11:00 AM at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church of Orlando, 604 W. Jackson Street, Orlando with Pastor Derrick Williams, officiating. Interment: Woodlawn Memorial Park, Orlando, with full military honors.
