Obituary:
Samuel Benton, 84 of Orlando departed this life on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Sam was born October 16, 1937 in Damascus, GA to Hezekiah Benton, Sr. and Rosie Mae Hayes Benton. Samuel confessed Christ at an early age joined Pleasant hill Missionary Baptist Church , Damascus, Ga. He received his education in Miller County, Bethel High School in Colquitt, Ga. Sam was raised on a farm, a very energetic and hard worker. He enjoyed quartet singing and with his cousins and friend formed their own quartet group. His favorite singing groups were the Mighty Clouds of Joy and the Soul Stirrers. Samuel enlisted in the United States Army. After his discharge he married Ruby, to this union was born one daughter, Wyland Denise Benton. He later married Gladys and has a son Michael.
Sam was an avid checker player. He was very knowledgeable about Orlando having spent many years as taxi cab driver, also worked at the bus station and a delivery service. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Zirie James Benton, Sr.
He is survived by a daughter, Denise Dunston; son, Michael Benton; step-mother, Mrs. Clara Arnett Benton; Siblings, Presider Lemar Jones; Mrs. Rosie B. Childs; Mrs. Alva B. Fuller, Ms. Thelma D. Benton, Reverend Hezekiah Benton, Jr. (Ruth); Mr. Arlester Benton (Marilyn); step-sisters, Ms. Shirley Arnett, Ms. Cynthia Arnett; God-siblings, Rev. Silas and Mildred Swint; One aunt, Mrs. Christine Bush; one uncle, Mr. Rosselle Hayes; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 4-6PM at the mortuary. A service of celebration will take place on Thursday, February 17, 2022, 12:00 Noon at Postell’s Mortuary Chapel, Orlando with Pastor George Chambliss, Jr., eulogist. Final services and burial will take place on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Jonas Lobe Cemetery, Bainbridge, GA under the direction of Peter Bruton Mortuary.
