Obituary:

On the afternoon of September 6, 2019, after a blessed life, well lived of 92 years, he took off mortality and transitioned into immortality. He was a believer in God and in His Son, Jesus Christ. He is resting right now in the Kingdom of Heaven. He’s absent from his body and present with The Lord.

Richard Emory Wells was born on March 31, 1927 in Jones County, Gray, Georgia to his loving parents Austin Gaines Wells and Willie Inez Solomon Wells (Deceased). The second oldest, he was the sole survivor of his siblings, Consuelo “Connie” Curley & Albert Curley Sr., deceased; Raymond Wells (Deceased) Wife- Dorothy Wells, Junction City Kansas; Inez Aurelia Hannon & Husband- Kenneth Hannon, (Deceased).

The family moved to Junction City, Kansas when he was a very young child. He attended public school and graduated from Junction City Sr. High School May 18, 1945. He was drafted in August 1945 and served honorably in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve where he retired in 1984. During his service he received promotions through the ranks, the highest being Captain, USAR. He served in Germany, WWII and the Korean Conflict. He received medals for his service including the Purple Heart, Victory Medal the National Defense Service Medal and Two Overseas Service Bars.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science & History from the West Virginia State College on May 27, 1951. While matriculating at West Virginia State College he met and soon fell in love and married his wife of 48 years Betty Jean Fulmore Wells (d August 22, 1999). They have five children: Jeanene Yvette Wells (March 10, 2008); Jeanese Yvonne Wells; Austin Harrison Wells; Beatrice RiCarda Wells-Brown (Husband- Keith Brown); Richelle Emory Wells.

After Military Service he worked for Hubbard Construction Company. Then in 1965 he began working for the U. S. Post Office. He was promoted to Supervisor and was the first Black Supervisor in the Orlando Area. He also did a national commercial for the US Post Office for the introduction of the Zip Code. He retired from the U. S. Post Office in 1987.
He was a generous contributor to many charities and local causes. He was a Lifetime member of the 9th & 10th Horse Cavalry Association (Buffalo Soldiers) & the Triple Nickle Association (555th Parachute Infantry 1944-1947). He supported his Postal Service Breakfast Club where he will be missed. And we can’ leave out that he was awarded certification as a Boy Scout Second Class in the Quivira District Boy Scouts of America. He also leaves behind 8 Grand Children and 11 Great-Grand Children as well as numerous Nieces & Nephews.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 21, 2019, 11:00 AM at St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1968 Bruton Boulevard, Orlando. Inurnment will immediately follow at First Orlando Memorial Gardens, 3000 N. John Young Parkway Orlando.
