Obituary:
Norweida Williams Maxwell was born March 14, 1945 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was the ninth child of Reverend Pete and Blanche Leggett Williams (both deceased). She attended Duval County public schools and graduated from New Stanton Senior High School, class of 1962. She furthered her education by attending and graduating from Edward Waters College, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. Norweida continued to Florida A&M University in the summer of 1966 and the Spring of 1967 receiving 12 hours towards a Master’s Degree in Education. She taught in Duval County Schools for two years before moving to New Orleans, Louisiana where she worked at WYLD radio station until moving back to Florida.
After returning to Florida she gained employment with Barclay’s Cabinets, Inc. where she worked for several years, learning how to make and install custom-made cabinets. Later, she established her own successful business which she kept until 2008. She never advertised; all work was word of mouth.
She accepted Christ at the age of six and was baptized at West Union Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida under the leadership of Reverend W.F. Cummings. Over most of the years, she maintained active membership in Jacksonville, New Orleans, and Orlando. Along her faith journey, some of her responsibilities in church were a choir member, Assistant Financial Secretary, Church Clerk, Baptist Training Union Teacher, Sunday School Teacher, Bible Teacher, advisor to Deaconess and Drama Ministry, facilitator for Deaconess Workshop in the Central Florida area and counselor to troubled teens, married couples and young adults.
In 1985, she married Reverend Fred L. Maxwell and they were united until his death in 2005. During their marriage, Reverend Maxwell mentored her and in 2005, Norweida answered her higher calling to be licensed in the ministry by her husband four months before his death. In 2009 she accepted the call to pastor Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Longwood, Florida where she served until 2016.
Norweida passed from this life September 18, 2024. She leaves to mourn her son Richard Kent Thompson, grandson Richard Brandon Thompson, granddaughter Carmen Fife and Tierra Yancey, and great-granddaughter Anastasia Thompson. Many nieces and nephews, among them, Pamela Caison (Atlanta, GA), Carolyn Johnson, Yvette Smothers, James Smothers (All of Baton Rouge, LA), Duane Hudson (Tampa, FL), Sebra Ferrell (Winder, GA), Selena Williams (Atlanta, GA) and April Williams (Tallahassee, FL). Special friends Mary Pope (Longwood, FL) and Yvonne Grey (Sanford, FL).
A service of memory will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, 2:00 PM at Postell’s Mortuary Chapel, Orlando.
