Obituary:
Janet Alberta King, 84, of Clermont, departed this life on Monday, February 10, 2025. Janet, the daughter of Clinton L. Moore and Mary Edna Bogie, was born on August 30, 1940, in Cincinnati OH and gave he life to Christ at the young age of 12. She had 2 older sisters Marion Dula and Sylvia Thompson both of whom proceeded her in death whom she cared for during their times of illness. She was educated in Cincinnati public schools and received her high school diploma from Withrow high. She then attended the University of Cincinnati where she received her BA in education and then her Masters degree from the University of Florida in Computer Engineering.
She began her career in education with Cincinnati public schools in 1963 as a math teacher but became interested in computer programming and was hired by General Electric in Cincinnati OH. She was then transferred to Schenectady, NY to General Electric’s research department for computer programming, where she became the first African American woman to help develop GE’s programming system. During this time, she met Edward Charles King in Schenectady, NY. They dated for five years before they married on August 10th, 1968. Born to this union was one daughter, Sherri Renee and one son Charles Michael. They would continue to reside in Schenectady, NY for 17 years. Charles also worked at GE and was eventually transferred to the plant in Gainesville FL in August of 1980. Upon relocating, Janet began teaching at the University of Florida as an academic advisor for the computer engineering department and as a math professor at Santa Fe College.
Janet participated in many organizations which include being a charter member of the Albany Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, a current member of Orlando Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, previous member of the Gainesville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, the Visionaries, the Links inc. She was an active participant with her church family at Mount Carmel Baptist Church and was the director of The Saturday Academy at the church for many years. Janet found time to be a mentor for the Guardian Ad Litem program and a multitude of other Youth programs in the community. Janet also found a passion working with the Democratic party where she served as their treasurer for many years.
Janet is survived by her husband, Charles King Jr. of Clermont, FL; her devoted daughter, Sherri Renee of Clermont FL; her dedicated son, Charles Michael of Boynton Beach, Florida; her loving grandson, Sean Christopher King of Clermont FL; her five sisters in law, her 2 brothers in law and an abundance of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, sorority sisters and friends around the country.
Janet will be remembered as a devoted caregiver for her husband, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and a great friend. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 28, 2025 from 5PM- 6:30PM at the church. The Links Ceremony will begin at 6:30 PM, followed by the Omega Omega Service at 7:00PM. A service of celebration will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, 11:00 AM at Majestic Life Church, 821 S. Kirkman Road, Orlando with Pastor Destin L. Williams, officiating.
