Obituary:

Hettie Jeannette Coleman Tyson, 75, of Orlando, departed this life on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Jeannette was born in Sebring, FL on October 2, 1950 to the late Ralph G. Coleman Sr. and Joanna Watson Coleman. She was educated on the campus of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, receiving her high school, bachelor’s and master’s degrees at this outstanding institution.

Ms. Tyson began her teaching career in Waycross, Georgia, continued in Lake City, Florida and culminated her teaching at Valencia Community College in the Math department for over 30 years.

Ms. Tyson was active in numerous organizations including the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. From 1995-1997, she served as the President of the Orlando Alumnae Chapter. Aside from her civic involvement, she was an active and dedicated member of Mt. Olive AME Church in Orlando for several years. Over the past four decades, Jeannette participated on the Steward board, as an usher, on the culinary committee, the Department of Christian Education and with the senior’s ministry. She served faithfully and offered her talents willingly even as her health began to decline. Jeannette put God first in all that she did and she made sure her family knew who God was and how good God is.

She will be deeply missed by her sister, Mary Whetsel, aunt, Hettie B. Powell (Glenn), sister-in-law, Pamela T. Coleman; nieces, Terri Gabriel-Bryant (Clinton), JoAnna Wright, Robin Gilchrist, Dubora Williams, RaQuel Coleman; nephews, Ronald Gilchrist, Kareem Whetsel, Ramaal Coleman (Crystal); and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, former students, colleagues, sorority sisters and many friends. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025 from 5PM- 6:30PM at the church. The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc. Omega Ceremony will begin at 6:30 PM, followed by the Omega Omega Service at 7:00PM. A service of celebration will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, 11:00 AM at Mt. Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church, 2525 W. Church Street, Orlando with Pastor Marcus Green, officiating.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, a scholarship has been established in her honor at Mount Olive AME Church: The H. Jeannette Tyson Educational Scholarship. Contributions may be made through:
