Obituary:

Edna Pearl Straw, 67, of Winston-Salem, NC, transitioned from labor to reward on Saturday, December 28, 2019. Ms. Edna Pearl Straw was born on July 21, 1952 in Clayton, Alabama to the late Johnnie Bell Womack and Eddie Straw.

Edna accepted Christ at an early age; she joined the C.M.E. church family in 1985 while residing in Cleveland, Ohio. Edna loved the Lord and was a faithful member serving in many capacities throughout more than three decades, most recently as the Lay Board President at Hanes Memorial C.M.E. Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, educator, and friend. Edna retired from the Florida Department of Children and Families in 2013 after earning her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she became an educator, teaching Pre-Kindergarten, until her passing. Edna will forever be remembered for her loyalty, her wittiness and as an advocate for children and families.

Edna leaves to cherish her memory: two loving daughters, Catina Straw of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Afrchia (Ricardeau) Straw-Dorcelus of Orlando, Florida. One sister, Willean Moses of Clayton, Alabama and one brother, Lee Roy (Gloria) Straw of Clayton, Alabama. Three beautiful grandchildren, Isaac Wilkes, Takai Straw, and Ricardeau Dorcelus, Jr. that will greatly miss their nanny; and nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 17, 2020 from 4-7PM at the mortuary. A service of Celebration will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020, 11:00 AM at Mt. Olive Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 745 Woods Avenue, Orlando with Pastor Tyrone Jones, officiating. Interment: Washington Park Cemetery, Orlando.

I remember working with Edna at DCF many years ago. She was always caring about her clients and friendly to staff. I am sorry to learn of her passing. It sounds like she has a great family to carry on for her.

If I could just touch the hem of his garment. Ms Straw you are now in that Heavenly home with the many others that helped groom so many into the beings that we are today. I will always cherish the last conversation of truth that we shared. Rest in Peace!

Gonna miss all the wonderful times we spent growing up in Utica, New York. Gonna miss that beautiful smile and how you knew just the right words to say to comfort others while you were going through your own battle. Thank you for being a wonderful Auntie to us and a sister to my mother Louise who I know will always cherish you in her heart. To your daughter’s (our cousins) and family remember that although “weeping my endureth for a night great joy cometh in the morning”. Rest with God Auntie.

Distance and time separated us but not the love you brought to this family. Your smile and grace brought meaning to our family. Yes, Utica NY, where we were so fortunate to know such a loving and spiritual being. I will alway cherish those times and beyond. You have earned your crown. Rest In Peace. To my cousins, know that you are in our hearts and prayers.

I met Edna in 1991 when I arrived in Orlando. We lost track of each other over the years. She was one of the most kindest ladies you could ever meet. She loved her community, children and grand. I will never forget that gorgeous smile . Rest In Peace my sister.
