Obituary:
Calvin Noel Reid, affectionately known as “Bunny”, 91, of Winter Garden, Florida passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2019. Calvin was born in Kingston, Jamaica on May 12, 1928 to the late Clifford Henderson Reid and Gladys Graham. Calvin attended Central Branch primary school, then Wolmer’s Boys School.
He worked as a clerk for the Ministry of Health for a short while. In 1948 he left Jamaica to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Howard University he moved to New York and received his Master’s Degree in Sociology from New York University. He was passionate about his work and about helping the homeless population he served.
Calvin never forgot the families he left behind in Jamaica or the country of his birth and was always generous and giving back. He was an active member in the Wolmer’s Old Boys Association in New York which he was President for many years. He also visited his church in Jamaica where he grew up, was baptized and confirmed in St. Georges Anglican Church and gave to its many ministries. He was very active in the NAACP, the Urban League in New York that one time or another in his life and many other professional organizations.
Calvin is survived by his wife, Veronica; two sons, Calvin Noel Reid, Christopher Reid; two brothers, Algon (Fay), Patrick Tavares; three sisters, Una Ford, Faye Lawrence (George), Jean de Leon; three grandchildren, Christina, Cameron, and Cailin Reid; many nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 from 4-7PM at the mortuary. A service of celebration will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, 11:00AM at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 55 Center Street, Winter Garden with Pastor Clarence Taylor, officiating. Interment: Winter Garden Cemetery.
