Obituary:

Alta Jean-Baptiste, 85, of Orlando, departed this life on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. Alta was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on September 20, 1939 to parents Marcel Jean -Baptiste and Lucillia Adams.

Life was difficult in Haiti, and being one of the oldest of her siblings, she decided at the age of 17 years old to help her mom and her 15 brothers and sisters by moving to the United States of America in search of a better life for them all. Despite not speaking the English language, upon arriving to the United States she worked at any job she could find, including working at a glass bottle making factory. Alta worked hard, went to school, and later became a certified nurse’s assistant. She was able to bring all her brothers and sisters and her mother out of poverty and hardships from Haiti to the United States, where they were all able to provide a better life for themselves and their families.

She raised three daughters, Frances, Ruby, and Eureka and helped raise three beautiful grandkids, Ryan, Auriella, and Christopher, and was fortunate to see another generation and be part of her great granddaughter, Kammie’s life. She had a powerful impact on all their lives.

As a devout Christian, she took on every opportunity to serve, not only her family, but all others who needed her help. Everyone, both young and old, lovingly called her ‘Nana’. She joined Solid Rock Adventist Church, formally Beryl Wisdom Adventist Church, and served as a Deaconess for decades. She volunteered in their school, offered advice and testimony to those in need, prayed with the sick and even opened her home to anyone, even strangers, to stay there until they got back on their feet. Many people benefited from her kindness and generosity. She will forever be loved and cherished by all.

Alta is survived by her three daughters: Frances Dorry, Ruby Haspil, Eureka Desert-Kelly; one sister, Micheline Gingras; four brothers, Willy Cantave, Wilbert Cantave, Fritz Jean-Baptiste, Hughes Cantave; three grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and a host of other relatives, church family, and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025 from 4 to 6 PM at the mortuary. A service of celebration will be held Saturday, September 20, 2025, 10:00 AM at Postell’s Mortuary Chapel, Orlando with Pastor Samuel Dade, officiating. Interment: Highland Memory Gardens, Apopka.

At the request of the family, attendees are asked to address appropriately, preferably business or church attire for the funeral service of Alta Jean-Baptiste.
