Obituary:
Arthur James Mack, affectionately known as “ART” was born on June 9, 1944 in Winter Garden, Florida to George Mack Sr. and Lillie Bell Horton Mack. He was the third of seven children. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Bernard Mack and sister, Bertha Mack.
Arthur was educated in the Orange County Public Schools. He was a dedicated and hard worker throughout life. In the early seventies, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to Brooklyn, New York where he became a retail clothing salesman. In 1982, Arthur, relocated back to his hometown of Winter Garden, Florida with a vision, and continued his entrepreneurial spirit, opening up Mack’s Grocery Store. As owner of Mack’s Grocery Store, Arthur was very well known and met a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Arthur also owned a restaurant in Apopka, Florida. He owned both businesses synchronously. As a business owner in Winter Garden and Apopka, Arthur was highly respected for his philanthropy efforts while improving and serving the West Orange County communities. He was loved by many, particularly the Joe Louis Subdivision community. Family always remained central in his life and this was illustrated by his close relationship to his brothers and extended family. Arthur was a mentor and a father figure to many. He loved fashionable clothes and was known for his stylish dress.
In 2019, Arthur dissolved Mack’s Grocery Store and traveled to Detroit, Michigan to assist in the care of his ailing younger brother, Bernard to whom he shares the same birthday (June 9th). After Bernard passed away, Arthur decided to make Detroit his home. While residing in Detroit, Arthur was an active member of the State of Michigan National Action Network, a civil rights organization under the leadership of Reverend Charles Williams II, and founded by the Reverend Al Sharpton, National President. He was actively involved in a variety of activities serving as an advocate for social justice, particularly for African Americans.
Arthur departed this life on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, after a brief illness. To celebrate his life, memories and legacy, he leaves three children; Michelle Mitchell, Arthur Mack Thomas and Ta’Niesha Alston; six grandchildren; Deondra Wesley, Don Wesley, Jr., Adrian Wesley (Kishawna), Za’Marian Alston, Aaliyah Johnson and A’Nylah Johnson; nine great grandchildren; Janiah Jefferson, Makayla Loiseau, Deja Wesley, Don Wesley III, Destiny Wesley, Deana Wesley, Deshiya Wesley, Kovenant Wesley, and Kreed Wesley; seven God children; Valarie Appling, Lori Tarver, Markayla Mack, John Thomas, Maurice Brewer, Angie Fleming and Jamilia Modeste; four brothers, George, Jr. (Verdie); Josh (DeAnn); Joe (Jacquelyn) and Harold (Undrea); a very special friend and devoted companion, Karen Bethune; one sister-in-law, Estherline Mack; special friend, Henry Dudley; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Daddy you will be missed. A step dad so dear,

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of cousin Art. Art was one of my many family members I always looked up to. I always admired his sense of style and the cool manner in which he handled himself. He always treated and respected greatly my parents and his parents Aunt Lillie and Uncle George George . Both of whom I truly, truly miss to this very day. I believe Art was a combination of both parents with his passion and strength and most of all love for his family and friends. He will be missed, but he is home now with all our other family members who have passed on to a better life. I pray that those of us who are are still on this earth are living and working towards that life also.

I miss my UNC, he used to change my diapers. he was always a representative of black dignity. The first entrepreneur in the Mack family. A legend of hope, togetherness, an example of true love of support for his family. We conversated on a regular basis. The last words he said to me HOLD MY OWN! A NEW NAT TURNER FOR EQUALITY AND JUSTICE. COINCIDENTALLY his CEREMONY IS ON VETERANS DAY, MY SON’S BIRTHDAY AND THE DAY NAT TURNER DIED. HE WAS A REVOLUTIONARY OF PEACE, DIGNITY AND LOVE FOR ALL.
