“Butchie”, as his mother would call him, was one of my best friends from the first grade. We were “road dogs” from elementary school through middle school at Darnell-Cookman. We went to different high schools, and seperate ways, at the end of the eight grade. We were the first wave of children to be part of the desegregation process in Duval County.
I think of James (“McTear” or “Butch” to us kids) fondly, with joy and pride, for all of the wonderfilled times that we had as children. He was the first one to teach me about baseball stats, and the best student in school. We competed and tied for “perfect attendance” in Ms. Morehead’s 5th grade class. There was not a project or adventure that he was not game for in “our gang”.
He will be missed with the warmest of memories.
He lives in the hearts of many.

God’s Peace and Grace to the family of a man, who as a child, influenced many.
When I think of James McTear I can only think of a real gentle soul for over 53 years never changing. James took pride in being a good person, a scholar and excellent musician in the Stanton Blue Devils Marching Band. Excelling in all of those areas. James was a proud graduate of the Stanton Class of 1971 a class that has been deeply touched about his Homegoing and we will certainly cherish his memories. James smile was infectious one that will always be remembered. To Deborah and the girls our prayers are with you and we will continue to keep you all in prayer and in our hearts.

James greeted me to the stats crew before the Magic had a team. We became the best of friends living around the corner, twice. I will miss my friend with that laugh of his and his expertise in assisting the Stat Team in what had to be done, during a game. I am truly going to miss him and I ask the Lord to Bless and keep his family strong in this time of sorrow. I miss you BRO. REST IN PEACE.
To the McTear Family,
I ask that GOD blesses you with peace and many fond memories of Mr. McTear. Mr. McTear was a business partner of my mother that became a great friend of our family.
