Obituary:

Owen Bryan Hylton (OB), 80, of Orlando, departed this life on Wednesday, September 25, 2019. Owen was born August 17, 1939 in Mt. Horeb, St. James, Jamaica, West Indies. His father Harold Hylton and Estella Hylton took care of him and four other siblings, Leonard, Hyacinth, Denzel, and Fenton. OB attended the primary school at Mt. Horeb and finished at the school in Bethel Town.

OB was a strong and determined young man who joined The British West India Regiment in the late 1950’s. During this time there was a movement to put together the Caribbean Federation to fight for independence. OB supported this movement as he liked the unity and camaraderie of the men from different Caribbean countries in his military unit. When the movement broke up, Jamaica got their independence from England in 1962. By virtue of independence OB continued his military service in the army of Jamaica, the Jamaica Defense Force. OB’s foresight into the future and support of unity continued throughout his life, every two years or so the regiment met in different countries to continue their friendships.

Back in 1961 a young lady called Carmen caught his eye and he fell in love. In 1963 he won her agreement and they got married. In 1970’s they settled in Brooklyn, NY and OB started working with the Tug and Barge Company in New Jersey. In the mid 70’s OB had all his immediate family with him including children Bertrand, Dahlia, and Cheryl.

OB continued to succeed and starting working with the NY City Transit, rising from the ranks of conductor until he became a motorman instructor, and eventually gained one of the highest promotions as a dispatcher.

He is survived by his wife, brother, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

He lived a good life. He was informed, witty, loving, and considered the Pops and Grandpa forthe young as well as the old. Many have benefited from his inspiration and lively debates. As OB would often tell us “everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.” We would love to see that smile now as you look down on us from heaven.

OB you are missed by your community.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019 from 3 PM until services begin at 4 PM, Postell’s Mortuary Chapel, Orlando with Pastor Allan Simpson, officiating. Final services and burial will take place in Brooklyn, New York.
