Hyacinth Virginia Ricketts, 88, of Orlando, departed this life on Thursday, March 9, 2017. Hyacinth was born on September 24, 1928, in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Her mother was Adina Watson. Hya lived in Manchester with her grandmother, Liza Webb, whom she credits with instilling in her the spirit of self-reliance and a strong work ethic. Hya attended Nazareth All Age School. Hyacinth migrated to England in August 1960, where she worked as auxiliary hospital staff. Her next move was to New York in 1967.

Hya may be described as the original entrepreneur. Her Monday to Friday job, for over 20 years, was as housekeeper with the owners of Gluck Watch Factory in New York. Having attained a hairdressing license, her Friday nights and Saturdays were dedicated to doing hair for a multitude of her friends and associates in her basement salon. Additionally, she rented rooms in her 3-story home, which helped her financially, as well as provided accommodations for many in need. Hyacinth retired and moved to Florida in November 1991. In April 1993, Hyacinth accepted a job at Hyatt Hotels as a housekeeper. She remained in that position until 1999.

Christmases were always special for Hya. Both in New York and Florida, her home welcomed the season and was open to the entire community for Christmas morning breakfast. Her carrot cakes were delicious and she often had one for the traveler to take home. Hya was the life of the party, she was a happy woman.

As one who always needed to be gainfully occupied, Hyacinth joined the Orange County Foster Grandparents Program in 2004. She volunteered at Pine Hills Head Start Center where she provided love, support and individual attention to the children in their care. She remained active in this role until her illness in April 2014. She loved life and fully participated in all activities provided”. Hya loved the staff and thanked them often for the impeccable care they provided.

Hyacinth Virginia had a strong faith. She was a member of Methodist churches both in New York and Florida. She accepted her illness, refused additional surgery and often declared her readiness for passing from this mortal life to be with her Lord and Savior. She will always be admired and remembered for her kindness, her encouraging words and her welcoming and winning smile.

Hya will be missed by her nieces, cousins, god-children, adopted children, other family members and a host of friends. May her soul rest in peace.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 from 10 AM until services begin at 11:00AM, Postell's Mortuary Chapel, 811 N. Powers Drive, Orlando with Reverend Arnold Porter, officiating. Interment: Orlando Memorial Gardens, Apopka, FL.
